Ponies and Vultures

I'm enjoying a short vacation in Maryland near Assateague Island. Firstly, although they are not urban, here are a few pictures I took yesterday of the famous wild ponies at Assateague National Seashore.

And secondly, geez there are a lot of vultures around here! I'm accustomed to seeing vultures circling high overhead. It is surprising to me, though locally common, to see turkey vultures and black vultures up close sitting in fields, dining on roadkill, and resting on the rooftops. For example...

A pair of American Black Vultures, Coragyps atratus

  1. Lovely ponies & strange-as-ever vultures. I've been wanting to visit down there since reading Misty of Chincoteague more years ago than I care to count.

  2. The ponies are really beautiful. If you visit after the beach season it is pleasantly deserted. As a New Yorker, I am acutely aware of the low density of humans and traffic all around, too, so it is a pleasant place to visit on many levels. Also worth noting that there are a lot of white ibis to be seen on the wildlife drive at Chincoteague in Virginia.

  3. Gorgeous...thanks for sharing. I found your blog entirely by accident and now it's become one of my odd little pleasures-- thanks again.
